FASHIONING OUR WORLD: WORKSHOP SERIES

The Salisbury Museum have an impressive collection of historic fashion, with some incredible and unique stories behind some of the pieces. They’ve developed the Fashioning Our World project to engage with young people and explore these stories further to inspire us to think differently about the clothes we wear now.

Unpicking the past to thread together the future

The project is discovering the hidden stories of sustainability told by clothes and accessories from the past and works with young people aged 11-25 to share these and change attitudes to fashion in the future. Fashioning Our World offers a chance for young people to:

  • Work alongside experts and museum volunteers to discover the hidden stories of sustainability found in collections of historic clothes and accessories.

  • Learn the skills to work on their own clothes – such as visible mending, patching and remaking.

  • Make a positive difference by inspiring others in the community to think differently about fashion sustainability

Katy England, who leads the Fashion Our World project, has shared with us the incredible story of this great coat, pictured above on the right - worn and mended by Howard Harris, the Mayor of Salisbury in the 1890s.

TWO WORKSHOPS

In November 2022 SFW hosted two workshops to contribute to the Fashioning Our World project, sharing our experience of building networks and inspiring people to take action through community-to-community engagement.
