Bethany May:
Who is behind your business? Who are your team members?
Set up by Bristol based Silversmith Bethany May Silver, Silver & Steel has grown into a community of residents, teachers, makers and students who all share a passion for responsibly made jewellery, the craft and the process.
When were you established as a business?
As a child I was always making clothes, designing clothing but also loves more practical skills involving metal so when I discovered silversmithing it was the perfect blend of physical craft and beautiful accessorising.
Where are you based?
East Street, in Bristol’s Arts District - Bedminster.
What is your background?
I had an unorthodox journey into fashion as a career, initially jewellery making was something I discovered as a hobby. I took evening classes around work and started making as a way to direct creative energy. I built Silver & Steel as a place to support and inspire the local jewellery industry as well as to educate and connect the public with the jewellery they choose to buy and wear. Having Silver & Steel is way to combine my passion of jewellery making with my belief in the importance of strong local communities, short ethical supply chains and inclusion.
What are your aims for taking part in SFW?
To raise awareness around jewellery in fashion spaces and encourage people to consider their choices in what they wear, buy and dispose of.
Do you have any guiding principles that your organisation uses?
Our values are Sustainability, Community and Accessiblity.
Are there any fun facts about you/ your team that you’d like to share?
We come from different backgrounds, have different passions and areas we are interested in but there’s nothing we enjoy more than a nerdy chat about lab grown gemstones vs artisanal mining which is something you can engage with with us at the panel discussion we are holding as part of SFW.
How would you recommend we can “Reclaim Fashion”?
By upskilling to repair your own items, engaging with independent designers and services, and by spending money only on brands that align with your values.
Quick Fire Questions
What is your top tip for those new to consuming fashion sustainably?
Practicing ignoring social media advertising. I like to think rather than spending £100 on fast fashion over the course of a set amount of time I might let myself spend that money on one well made item that I will treasure and that will last.
Are there any documentaries/ exhibitions/ books you’d recommend for someone who is looking to change their perspective or educate themselves on the topic of fashion sustainability?
‘Nothing lasts forever’ about the global diamond industry.
What is your favourite wardrobe staple?
My big silver hoops! I wear one pair of earrings every day and its a pair of hoops I made, you can make a pair as well at on of our workshops!
